The local Wreaths for Veterans organization will hold its 6th Annual Wreaths for Veterans Ceremony on Saturday, Dec 17, at 11 am, at the Sackets Harbor Military Cemetery, located at the corner of Dodge Avenue and Ogden Lane in the Village.
Over its six year history, the Wreaths for Veterans fundraising program has become a huge success, and the dedication ceremony is a much-anticipated event. The ceremony honors veterans for both their service and sacrifice.
The fundraiser reached its goal of placing a fresh wreath at every headstone in the Sackets Harbor Military Cemetery each preceding year, and in years when the community’s been especially generous, the Wreaths for Veterans organization donates any remaining funds to other local groups supporting veterans.
“Thank you for your past contributions and helping honor both our fallen veterans and our local veterans,” said Organizer Jamie Lynn Mendelson. “As one of the monuments states, ‘We are here because they are here’.”
Wreaths for Veterans is still seeking donations for this year, as well as volunteers to help lay the wreaths for the Dec 17th ceremony. With the community’s assistance, and the generosity of Simmons Farm in Copenhagen, who make all the wreaths at cost, Mendelson hopes to have another successful year.
