SUMMARY:21st Annual Sackets Harbor SpokerRide
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, July 29\, the Village of Sackets Harbor will host the 21st Annual SpokerRide\, benefiting the American Cancer Society\, Relay for Life\, and the Volunteer Transportation Center\, Inc. The premier bike ride/race in the North Country\, the SpokerRide has raised over $170\,000 for cancer-related causes since its inaugural ride in 2003. \n“We’re excited to be back again for another year of the SpokerRide\,” said organizer Jeff Wood. “Last year\, we marked 20 years\, and it still feels like only yesterday that we started.” \nThis year’s SpokerRide will consist of three events: \n\na 50-mile ride\, beginning at 8:30 am;\na 30-mile ride\, beginning at 8:45 am; and\na 10-mile fun ride\, beginning at 9 am.\n\nAll three events start at the Hounsfield Town Offices\, at 411 West Washington Street\, in Sackets Harbor. \nRegistration is $60 per rider for all races\, with discounts available for early birds\, active duty military members\, and veterans. The deadline for entries is Thursday\, July 27. DESCRIPTION:The Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site will host Paint Teapots\, a Saturday Crafts at the Navy Yard event\, on Saturday\, July 29\, from 10 am to 1 pm\, at the Battlefield Navy Yard\, located just off West Main Street. \nPractice your artistic skills as you paint miniature wooden teapots (while supplies last) with colorful patterns in this Saturday Crafts event. While you’re working on your own teapot\, you’ll learn how early settlers in the North Country planted and grew herbs and wild plants to make their own tea. \nThe Saturday Crafts series at the Battlefield is new this year and is designed to engage children in creating a souvenir while learning a bit of history. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site on Saturday\, July 29\, from 10 am to 3 pm\, when the past comes alive for this 1812 Living History Day. \nThis day of demonstrations is one in a series of free Living History events at the Sackets Harbor Battlefield throughout the summer\, which began on Memorial Day (Monday\, May 29) and continues through New York State’s Official War of 1812 Observance Day on Saturday\, September 30. \nFor this event (weather permitting)\, the historic site’s 1812 Marine Guard and other volunteer living history presenters will recreate a soldiers’ encampment in the Memorial Tree Grove and portray aspects of life during the War of 1812 for soldiers\, sailors\, Marines\, and the militia. SUMMARY:19th Century Farming Presentation at the Battlefield
DESCRIPTION:The Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site will host a presentation and living history demonstrations on 19th century farming practices on Saturday\, July 29\, from 10 am to 3 pm\, at the Battlefield’s Navy Yard. \nHistorian and Living-History Presenter Paul Supley will lead the living history demonstrations and presentation\, titled “Plant the Seed: 19th Century Agricultural Practices and Farming Through the Seasons.” The presentation will explore how the changing seasons guided 19th century farmers in planting and growing crops\, and it will examine the foods our ancestors from that time actually ate. \nSupley has over 40 years of experience\, and he’s the former site manager of Old Fort Johnson and the Herkimer Home State Historic Site. He has also consulted and appeared in many movies\, documentaries\, and at historic venues.
