Attendees will gain a better understanding of the American Revolutionary period links Mohawk decisions to form\, break\, or maintain alliances with Europeans and/or colonists. They’ll also discover how the concepts of Indigenous self-determination shaped the use of land in the North Country\, guided by survival and persistence. \nThis talk is part of series of discussions on “Place and Story\,” co-hosted by the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site and Hay Memorial Library in Sackets Harbor. DESCRIPTION:The Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site will present a talk by Archeologist Dr. Tim Abel on Reassessing the Militia’s Role in the Second Battle of Sackets Harbor on Thursday\, April 30\, at 6:30 pm\, at the (former) Union Hotel\, at 401 West Main Street. \nTim’s recent archeology work along Ambrose Street in Sackets Harbor reveals a very different story about the Militia’s right flank action on the Battlegrounds\, from the Horse Island landing site through the battle’s early stages on May 29\, 1813. We can now picture a sustained firefight through the forest on what is farmland for us today. DESCRIPTION:The Sackets Harbor Historical Society and the Sackets Harbor Battlefield Alliance will hold their joint annual meeting on Thursday\, Feb 12\, at 7 pm\, at the (former) Union Hotel\, at 401 West Main Street. \nThe featured speaker for the evening is Lydia Miller\, the project coordinator for the NYS Parks\, Recreation & Historic Preservation Department’s restoration work on the Union Hotel and Horse Island. Miller will give attendees a glimpse behind the scenes at the intricate process of restoring the historic lighthouse and hotel structures. Learn about what workers discovered and how they continue to adapt\, following historic preservation standards to care for these architectural treasures. \nA North Country native\, Lydia Miller has worked in the Adirondacks and Thousand Islands regions. She holds a master’s degree from Yale University\, and she served as the chief architect for Built Heritage at Parks Canada. In addition to her work with the NYS Parks\, Recreation & Historic Preservation\, Miller also serves as vice president of the Lewis County Historical Society Board in Lowville. \nThe Sackets Harbor Historical Society has worked for more than 40 years to preserve and protect village history\, with a special focus on its architectural heritage. The Battlefield Alliance supports interpretive programming and battlefield preservation at the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site. Both organizations will accept new members and current member renewals at this meeting. DESCRIPTION:The Hounsfield Senior Citizens will hold a Soup Luncheon and monthly meeting on Monday\, Jan 5\, at noon\, at the Sackets Harbor Municipal Building\, at 112 North Broad Street. \nThe group meets on the first Monday of every month for either a luncheon or a dinner throughout the year\, and attendees are asked to bring a dish to pass for the dinners. \nMembership in the Hounsfield Senior Citizens group is open to anyone aged 55 and over and costs just $5 per year. To join the group\, please inquire about membership at the event or contact Membership Chairperson Cathy Chrisman at 315-778-9678.
