The Archaeology of Battlespaces Event

The Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site will host “History Beneath Our Feet: The Archaeology of Battlespaces,” on Saturday, Aug 19, from 1 to 2 pm, at the Battlefield Pavilion off Hill Street.

Local Archaeologist Tim Abel will lead this hands-on learning lab immersion experience. The event will begin with a presentation by Tim, discussing the work he’s done at numerous North Country locations, including Sackets Harbor and Clayton. Then enjoy a visual tour of War of 1812 research across northern New York, before watching a demonstration of research methods and equipment, such as:

• Screening,
• Metal detecting, and
• GPS locating.

Following the discussion and demonstration, it’s time for some hands-on learning. Participants will try out the research methods and equipment “in the field,” at tree planting locations along nearby Hill Street.
