Cheesemaking Talk at the Union Hotel

Discover the history of local cheesemaking at “The Whey It Was: Cheesemaking in Jefferson County” on Tuesday, Oct 22, at 6:30 pm, at the (former) Union Hotel, at 401 West Main Street, in Sackets Harbor.

Historian Larry Corbett will present this cheesemaking talk, which showcases one of the diverse ways the American landscape influences our experiences and way of life. For more than 50 years, Jefferson County was a leader in cheese manufacturing for domestic and foreign markets. Corbett will discuss how early cheesemaking on small family farms grew to an international legend. He’ll also reveal a connection to the North Country’s War of 1812 history with the story of war veteran Col. Meacham, who produced a mammoth cheese that he shipped from Sandy Creek to the president in Washington, D.C.

This cheesemaking talk is part of series of discussions on “Place and Story,” co-hosted by the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site and Hay Memorial Library in Sackets Harbor. All the talks in the series are free, and the public is welcome to attend.
