The Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site will host the return of the North American War of 1812 Grand Tactical on Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28, 2024. Events and activities are still in the early planning stages, but the schedule is tentatively for Saturday, July 27, from 9 am to 9 pm, and Sunday, July 28, from 9 am to 3 pm.
The Grand Tactical is an annual gathering of hundreds of War of 1812 re-enactors, historians, and authors, who are joined by a dozen watercraft and numerous musicians, dancers, and living history specialists. Grand Tacticals alternate annually between the United States and Canada, and organizers strive for a large scale, unique program showcasing all North American living history units portraying the 1812-era.
The Sackets Harbor community last hosted the Grand Tactical in 2010, and that event drew over 400 re-enactors, their watercraft, numerous distinguished US and Canadian historians and authors, and thousands of spectators.
Sackets Harbor was selected as the site for the 2024 event because of its authentic battlegrounds and ranking by the National Park Service as one of the top 10 War of 1812 sites in the United States.
Sackets Harbor is ranked by the National Park Service as one of the top sites of importance in the War of 1812. The Village features an expansive and pristine battleground, including 24-acre Horse Island, as well as grounds and shoreline that played a key role in the Second Battle of Sackets Harbor, on May 29, 1813.
