Land, Liberty, and Loss Talk at the Union Hotel

Discover the stories of local Indigenous people in “Land, Liberty, and Loss,” a talk on Tuesday, Oct 29, at 6:30 pm, at the (former) Union Hotel, at 401 West Main Street, in Sackets Harbor.

Dr. Melissane Schrems, a professor of history at St. Lawrence University, will lead this discussion on how the historical and ongoing stories of Indigenous peoples and the evolution of the American landscape are intertwined. Attendees will gain a better understanding of the American Revolutionary period links Mohawk decisions to form, break, or maintain alliances with Europeans and/or colonists. They’ll also discover how the concepts of Indigenous self-determination shaped the use of land in the North Country, guided by survival and persistence.

This talk is part of series of discussions on “Place and Story,” co-hosted by the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site and Hay Memorial Library in Sackets Harbor. All the talks in the series are free, and the public is welcome to attend.
