Join us in Sackets Harbor to see the moon perfectly cover the sun during the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, on Monday, April 8!

Sackets Harbor is in the center of the path of totality, which means the sun will go from partially eclipsed to 100% eclipsed over the course of the afternoon. We’ll enjoy 3 minutes and 40 seconds of totality, and viewers will be able to see the full corona of the sun during this time, which is not normally visible to the human eye.

According to NASA, here are the important times to note on April 8, 2024 in Sackets Harbor:

  • 2:09 pm: The moon will begin to eclipse the sun.
  • 3:22 pm: The moon will fully eclipse the sun at 3:22 and 20 seconds.
  • 3:26 pm: The moon will begin to move beyond the sun.
  • 4:34 pm: The moon will be fully out of the way of the sun.

Wherever you’ll be viewing the eclipse from, please be aware of important safety information. Again, according to NASA, “(e)xcept during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Viewing any part of the bright Sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury.”

You can find a comprehensive article on eye safety during eclipses at the American Astronomical Society’s website. And you’ll find more safety tips on eye protection, sunscreen, driving, and more on NASA’s website.

In Sackets Harbor, we have several locations giving away or selling special eclipse glasses:

  • Hay Memorial Library (1 free pair per person, while supplies last)
  • Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site (1 free pair per person on eclipse day, while supplies last)
  • Sackets Harbor Visitor Center (1 free pair per person during eclipse weekend)
  • The Sandwich Bar (1 pair free with the purchase of food during eclipse weekend)
  • Chrissy Beanz

We’ll also be celebrating this extremely rare and awe-inspiring occurrence with educational programming and events leading up to April 8th and festivities on the date itself. During the four-day weekend of the eclipse (April 5 through April 8), Sackets Harbor will feature:

Additionally, Hay Memorial Library will host a post-eclipse event, Ask an Astrophysicist, on Tuesday, April 16, where attendees can ask follow-up questions about the eclipse and other astronomical occurrences.
