Astronomy Evening at the Battlefield

The Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site will host an Astronomy Evening on Friday, Aug 4, from 9:30 to 11 pm, outdoors at the Battlefield, near the big red barn.

As we prepare for the April 8, 2024 Total Solar Eclipse in Sackets Harbor, this program will help attendees learn more about solar eclipses and “Navigating the Night Sky.” Dr. Tim Abel will identify a few anchor objects like planets and constellations to assist visitors as they stargaze from the Battlefield. Participants will also have the opportunity to look through a telescope to easily locate the anchor objects discussed.

Come prepared with a picnic blanket or lawn chair, a red-light or a flashlight with a low light setting, binoculars, and insect repellant, and get ready to gaze at the sky! To find the outdoor presentation location, please park your vehicles at the Hill Street parking lot and follow the path lit by glow sticks to the Battlefield lawn that’s west of the big red barn.

In case of inclement weather, the Battlefield will move the program to Saturday, Aug 5, at the same time.
