Haudenosaunee Traditional Arts

Sackets Harbor will host a Haudenosaunee Traditional Arts presentation on Saturday, June 15, from 10 am to 2 pm, at the (former) Union Hotel, at 401 West Main Street.

Artists and Presenters Dolores Elliott and Ronnie Reitter will showcase the rich cultural Haudenosaunee art traditions of raised beadwork, cornhusk doll making, and storytelling. Their presentation will focus on “past to present.” The event is part of the I Love NY Path Through History Weekend, which also includes related workshops and a storytelling session on Friday, June 14.

The Haudenosaunee Traditional Arts programming complements the Smithsonian traveling exhibition, Voices and Votes: Democracy in America, that’s currently on display at the Union Hotel. The exhibition also features a local supporting exhibit regarding Haudenosaunee women’s influence on the women’s suffrage and abolition movement.

Voices and Votes: Democracy in America, and its accompanying programming, is presented by the Smithsonian Institution Museum on Main Street in cooperation with the Museum Association of New York (MANY), the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site, and Hay Memorial Library.

The exhibition will be open to the public in Sackets Harbor Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 3 pm, and on Saturdays, from 10 am to 4 pm. Its last day in the village will be Saturday, June 29; the exhibition will then move on to Seneca Falls.
