History Live Festival at the Battlefield

The Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site is proud to present a special, three-day History Live Festival on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, July 23, 24, and 25. The events and activities will take place each day from 10 am to 4:30 pm.
Bringing local history to life, this immersive experience will use a number of interactive features to engage the audience, imprinting a concrete sense of connection to a specific place and time. Visitors will experience the Navy Yard’s story in a whole new way — illustrating how land use becomes modified and adapted over time. Additionally, visitors will learn stories from War of 1812 African-American sailors, young Irish female immigrants in Commandant Tattnall’s 1860 household, and from the first (and only) female caretaker of the US Navy station at Sackets Harbor, Mrs. Frances “Frank” Metcalf.
Presenters will draw upon the art of theatre and drama to convey the speech, movement, thoughts, and feelings of their characters. The historic houses on the Battlefield, surrounding Navy Yard, and nearby battlegrounds will ground the performances in their very real settings. Local playwright, screenwriter, and media personality Craig Thornton will work with the presenters prior to the festival to bring truth to their acting and help them develop their characters. He will also lead a discussion for the public on Wednesday, July 22.
