Reassessing the Battle of Sackets Harbor
The Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site will present a talk by Archeologist Dr. Tim Abel on Reassessing the Militia’s Role in the Second Battle of Sackets Harbor on Thursday, April 30, at 6:30 pm, at the (former) Union Hotel, at 401 West Main Street.
Tim’s recent archeology work along Ambrose Street in Sackets Harbor reveals a very different story about the Militia’s right flank action on the Battlegrounds, from the Horse Island landing site through the battle’s early stages on May 29, 1813. We can now picture a sustained firefight through the forest on what is farmland for us today. This challenges the long-held narrative that the militia retreated in fear on that day.
